If you're in the market for a hands-free, high resolution night goggle system
that's compact, lightweight and easy to use, the ATN Viper may be the Night
Vision Unit you're looking for. With its one switch operation - after all, the
point of hands free is to actually be hands free ? the Viper lets you focus on
seeing rather than doing. Let's face it, no matter how stealthily you crawl or
how silently you stalk, struggling to adjust a bunch of bells and whistles on
your night goggles only increases your chances of giving up your position.
Of course, not everyone who requires night-vision capabilities is tracking prey.
Some night stalkers just want to capture the moment. Shutter bugs will
appreciate the optional Camera Adapter, which allows the Viper to be attached to
a camera for night photography. And anyone who has hunkered down and peered
through the darkness on a cold, wet night will be comforted to know that the
Viper is fog and moisture resistant. Best of all, The Viper 1 weighs in
at a feather light 9 ounces, so when you attach it to its easily adjustable
headgear, you won't need the neck muscles of a WWF wrestler to support it. Throw
in the two year warranty and the Viper starts to feel even lighter.
The Viper does have a couple of limitations. It runs on a single lithium battery
that keeps it powered up for about twenty hours. That's a respectable battery
life but it's important to keep in mind that there is no low battery indicator
to warn you when the juice is about to run out. Your best bet is to keep a spare
on hand, just in case. A more significant issue is the zoom, or lack of it. In
an effort to minimize weight and maximize simplicity, ATN has given the Viper a
standard 1x magnification lens, which means the Viper is not ready for its
close-up. But ATN does have an answer, albeit a slightly clunky one. An optional
Doubler and a 4x90 mm lens are available to provide 4x and 8x zoom capability.
Bottom Line: The Viper provides superior night vision capabilities in a
lightweight package that keeps things simple without sacrificing performance.
There are other night vision systems that offer more features but for comfort,
ease-of-use, and durability, the Viper is the perfect fit.
